
Until a legalization bill makes it through congress (which sources say may be coming soon) the legality of cannabis is strictly on a state-by-state basis. Here’s the comprehensive list of what cannabis products are legal in your state, and when the laws were passed.
Alabama
Alabama has allowed the use of low-THC high CBD products, like CBD oil, for medical purposes since 2014.
Alaska
Medicinal use of cannabis has been legal for residents of Alaska since 1998, making it one of the earliest states to legalize medical marijuana. Recreational use has been legal since 2014.
Arizona
Medical use of cannabis products, including marijuana, has been legal in Arizona since 2010.
Arkansas
Medical use of cannabis products, including marijuana, has been legal in Arkansas since 2016.
California
California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana, passing the law in 1996. Recreational use became legal in 2016.
Colorado
Medical use of cannabis has been legal in Colorado since 2000. This was one of the first two states to legalize recreational use, passing the law in 2012.
Connecticut
Medical use of cannabis products, including marijuana, has been legal in Connecticut since 2012.
Delaware
Medical use of cannabis products, including marijuana, has been legal in Delaware since 2011.
Florida
Medical use of cannabis products, including marijuana, has been legal in Florida since 2016.
Georgia
The use of low-THC, high CBD products for medical purposes has been legal in Georgia since 2015.
Hawaii
Hawaii was the first state to legalize the medical use of cannabis through the state legislature as opposed to ballot measure, and passed the law in 2000.
Idaho
No cannabis products are currently legal in Idaho.
Illinois
Medical use of cannabis products, including marijuana, has been legal in Illinois since 2013. Recreational use was decriminalized in 2016 and legalized in 2019.
Indiana
Indiana is in a slightly complicated spot on this list. The state allows unrestricted use of low-THC CBD products, and have since 2018, but do not allow the medical or recreational use of high-THC products.
Iowa
The use of low-THC, high-CBD products for medical purposes has been legal in Iowa since 2014.
Kansas
Kansas, like Indiana, allows unrestricted use of CBD products that do not contain active quantities of THC. They passed this law in 2018
Kentucky
The use of low-THC, high CBD products for medical purposes has been legal in Kentucky since 2014.
Louisiana
Medical use of cannabis products, including marijuana, has been legal in Louisiana since 2015. The restrictions on medical use are still stricter than many other states, including requirements for products to be dispensed by a licensed pharmacist.
Maine

Maryland

West Virginia

Wyoming
No cannabis products are currently legal in Wyoming.
D.C.
Washington D.C.’s status as not a state, but still under its own governance has meant its path to legalization has been a bit complicated. The District passed a law legalizing medical marijuana in 1998 but was blocked from enacting that law until 2009. Similarly, D.C. legalized recreational use in 2014 but has until this point been blocked from allowing the commercial sale of recreational marijuana.

Groups in all these states are working to either get state legislatures to adopt reforms, or to get legalization measures on upcoming ballots. They need your help.
